A couple of weeks ago I asked what else I could do or was good at. I'm incredibly unhappy in my job and feel it's time to move on and maybe do something completely different. Well...just about every person who answered replied CAKE! Bake cakes and sell them. As good as it sounds I really don't think it would work. I don't care for cupcakes or celebration cakes, mainly because my decorating skills are pretty non existent. I love baking sponge cakes, sandwich cakes, traybakes etc. Is there really a market for such things?
If you go to Darts Farm Food hall, they sell home baked cakes for an extortionate amount and to be honest they're rubbish. I certainly wouldn't buy one. Ok, you have to cover the cost of ingredients etc but £5 for a cake is madness. We're talking Victoria Sponge here by the way. I know I could produce something much better and more exciting but...
So what to do? It's something that keeps coming back to haunt me. There's lots to consider and I certainly couldn't make a living out of it so it would have to be a part time side line. May be I should make a list at least. Afterall I have equipment, know how and recipes. That's a start surely. And if all else fails, I can continue to bake for friends and the Clandestine Cake Club.
In the mean time tell me what you think. Do you buy cake on a regular basis?
